Hey guys, so a LOT of people (including some close friends) have asked me this question. I just thought it would be best to write a blog post to address it.
For those of you who think I do – reality check – I just flew SpiceJet to Bangkok! I joke about it and say if I had the money I would definitely spend it on other things.
On a more serious note – I’m not buying anything on Instagram (actually, I did very seriously look at a LOT of Farida Gupta clothes for Ganpati but then got lazy and didn’t end up buying it).
As an entrepreneur trying to run a business and make ends meet – I have SO many expenses. You don’t even wanna know how much I spend on rent in this city. If I had extra money, the last thing I would spend it on is buying followers.
So what caused the follower spike? Honestly, I have NO idea. Till today, I’ve never looked at Instagram with a business model or a strategy. My only strategy on social media has always been to be true to myself. So if I’m having a shitty day, I talk about the shitty day. I don’t think life is perfect or rosy or easy and I never try to show that. I do believe in working super hard and having hard goals. I enjoy the process of working towards a goal and I know that the road is never simple. However, I do see the business opportunities on the gram. I won’t lie and tell you that it’s not a way to earn money. I do collaborations and promotions with brands I love. But unlike other influencers, this is not my primary source of revenue.
When I got the award from Instagram for best food account I asked them this question. I asked them why they picked me and they had data and algorithms to choose me. I’ve never thought about why my follower count was going up. I was just here with my head down, deep into macaron batter, trying to make a living. And then when I looked up suddenly I had 3 million followers 🤷🏾♀️ I really don’t know, I just do what I do and hope to build a community of people that can support each other and learn from each other. For me, I hope to make real connections with the people who follow me. Some of the nicest people I’ve met, have been through Instagram. Some of my best experiences have been because of the platform. So, I hope to continue doing what I’m doing. And hoping and praying that I make enough money that if wanted to buy 3 million followers tomorrow, I wouldn’t have to blink an eyelid. For now, back to my macaron batter, I have some big news – wait for it!
